What Are The Effects Of The Sun On Asphalt Shingles?

The summer time is the period in which the scorching effects of the sun are at the highest level. Your roof may have the ability of withstanding extreme weather conditions, although regular beating by the sun and heat can affect its durability. The sun can damage the roof to the point that there will become a need to replace it within a short period of damage. If you use an asphalt shingle, then your roof is vulnerable to the effects of the heat emanating from the sun. Some of these effects are highlighted below.

Decaying
Asphalt shingles start decaying due to the regular exposure to heat and sun. Newer shingles may offer some form of resistance for a longer time. The older ones however show signs of decay quickly. Decayed shingles often look rotted. They start to look like they are crippling. If you notice these signs in your shingles, then you need to repair them as soon as possible so that further damage can be averted.

Cracking
Shingles also start cracking when intense heat from the sun hits them. The increased tension in the shingle as it curls from the heat coming from the sun often lead to cracks in the shingle. Cracks in shingles should be repaired immediately to avert further damage to the roof.

Warping
Intense sun can also casue the asphalt shingles to curl or bend upwards. The older shingles are easily affected and they show these effects quickly.
